Artist Biography
Katina Davidson identifies as a Kullilli and Yuggera woman and a descendant of the Purga Mission, with maternal non-Indigenous Australian heritage. Her paternal grandmother, Georgina Margaret Thompson OAM, came from the Ipswich area (Yuggera Country) and was among the early residents of Deebing Creek Mission, established under the oppressive Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act of 1897 and its amendments, commonly known as The Act.
Her grandfather, Donald Davidson, was part of a family forcibly relocated by carriage from Thargomindah, over 1000 kilometers away, to Deebing Creek Mission in the early 1900s. After the mission's closure, they were transferred to Purga Mission. In the early 1990s, a portion of the original Purga Mission property was returned to its Elders and descendants, including a cemetery reserved for the original Purga occupants and their families.
Katina's grandfather was born under the birthing tree at Purga Mission in 1933 and was laid to rest there in 1993. Having visited the site frequently since childhood, she holds cherished memories of camping and playing, alongside more solemn recollections of funerals and the long processions from the property to the cemetery across the road.
